Caring For Your Animals With Essential Oils

CAUTIONS

Dilution is Critical in Small Animals

It is extremely important to carefully consider the species and weight of an animal when determining the amount of essential oil to use for any given situation.   CATS, in particular, are not able to metabolize oils in the way that people, dogs or other animals do; liver toxicity or failure can quickly result if oils are used improperly or carelessly.

For any animal under 100 lbs., dilution is necessary;

  • Figure one drop of oil for every 100 lbs. of the animals weight.  For example, for a 10-lb dog, add 1 drop of oil to 10 drops of Message Oil and mix well.  Then use 1 drop of the MIXTURE on the dog.
  • A general rule of thumb for using essential oils on cats and dogs is 3 days on, 3 days off.  This will give the body a chance to strengthen itself and heal, and will help avoid a healing crisis.
  • Most importantly, LESS IS MORE, especially with animals.  If you use too much oil on an animal you are likely to throw it into a healing crisis and further complicate the problem.
  • Observe your animal closely whenever using essential oils with them.  If you see any signs of toxicity, stop immediately and consult your holistic veterinarian as soon as possible.
  • Your pets have a much stronger sense of smell than you do.  Start with a mild mixture of oils; you can add a drop or two if really needed.
  • Remember, too, that animals usually choose things that are good for them - allow your animal to choose which oil they prefer.  Offer one drop of oil in each hand and see which hand they react to.
  • Cats & Essential Oils - Cats' livers cannot metabolize oils in the same way that people, dogs, or most other animals do.  Their bodies more or less "recycle" the oils, which can cause an excess accumulation in the liver.  This can occur very quickly (especially in smaller, weaker or elderly cats), whether through internal or external application, repeated or continuous inhalation (including diffusion), etc.  This can result in liver failure or death.
    • Monitor them closely for any signs of potential toxicity
    • allow 72 hours between applications
    • avoid long-term or repeated use, and never for more than 2 weeks without professional advice.
    • use only what is absolutely necessary, and in the smallest amount possible.
    • there are some aromatherapy professionals and holistic veterinarians who suggest that merely a few sniffs will trigger the healing process.

Animal Uses:

Anxiety

Essential oils can be very helpful in relieving anxiety in your pets - do they freak out around the 4th of July at all of the loud fireworks?  During thunder storms?  While they're being groomed?

  • Quiescent blend applied to their paws will almost instantly calm them.
  • A handkerchief around the dog's neck, with 1-2 drops Quiescent or Lavender will help them relax.

Calming an overactive Pet

4 oz of distilled water, 10 drops of Sweet Marjoram, 10 drops of Lavender, 5 drops of Sweet Orange

Combine ingredients in a 4 oz cobalt blue glass spray bottle and shake well. Lightly mist pet's bedding or the air around them, using caution to avoid their eyes. Shake bottle occasionally as you spray to keep oil evenly in the water.

You can also blend the three oils into 1 oz of message oil instead of the water and mix well. Apply a small amount to your palms, then rub through their fur. (caution: cats have extremely sensitive skin; this may not be appropriate for them)

Deworming

  • The oil is needed internally
  • Use Eucalyptus or Mistletoe Blend in capsules internally, diluted with Message Oil according to body weight (i.e. 1 drop for a 5-lb dog, 2 drops for a 10- to 15- lb dog, etc).  Capsules can be "hidden" in a snack or food; liverwurst is excellent for this if your dog has become "pill savvy".
  • Dilute Eucalyptus at least 75-80%, then drop on your cat or dog's tongue.
  • Use 2-3 drops undiluted on a goat.
  • For a horse you would use anywhere from 12 drops up to 5 ccs or 5 ml, depending on the size of the horse.
  • When shampooing it will kill any kind of lice, mites, or anything else that is attracted to fur.

Ear infections in dogs

  • One drop of Tea Tree behind the ear and 1 drop on the tongue, 3x per day.

Cuts, scrapes or animal bites

For cuts, scrapes or bites from another animal, use Tea Tree neat on a piece of gauze to cleanse and disinfect the wound. You can also make a spray of 20 drops of Tea Tree to 2 oz of distilled water and spray the area; be careful not to get any spray into your pet's eyes. Care should be taken to prevent the animal from licking the oil from the injured area.

Fly and Mosquito Spray (Horses)

  • Mix the following in 2 oz of water and spray on horses 2x daily:  10 drops Peppermint, 10 drops Lavender, 3 drops Lemongrass.

Insect Repellant

  • Flea and Tick spray.  Add 20-25 drops of essential oils in about 8 oz of purified water.  Use any of the following oils:  Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Geranium, Lemon, or Myrrh.  Shake well before spraying, and protect their eyes from the spray.  Spray anywhere that you think there may be an infestation.  (Fleas hate Lavender!)
  • Shampoo for dogs:  Add 4 drops each of Eucalyptus and Tea Tree to Silk Body Wash, shake to mix well, and shampoo.  Excellent for Lice.

Hip Displasia in Large Dogs

Hip dysplasia can be a sign that the dog is growing too quickly. (Not that we know how to slow down the growth, but that's typically the cause.)

  • For pain and inflammation, apply a drop or two of Fysical Thera P mixed with a drop or two of Message Oil on location.

Grass, Eating (Dogs)

This is an indicator of acidity; it's his/her way of showing it needs to be alkalinized.

  • Use FrequenSea or ZMP400, and you may want to introduce some veggies into their diets.  Dogs often LOVE eating raw, or slightly cooked veggies; many find that frozen green beans are a real treat!  Greens are especially valuable for dogs.

Licking Paws Excessively (Dogs)

  • Apply a drop of Tea Tree diluted at least 75% with Message Oil.  If that doesn't help, add a drop of Eucalyptus and a drop of Spice of Life and apply to the paw - they won't like the taste!

Nourishing the coat

  • Fleas hate Lavender!  A great nourishing treatment for your dog's or cat's fur is to take an ounce of Message Oil and add 1-2 drops Lavender.  Their coat will be beautiful and bug-free to boot!

Parvo Virus

The Parvo virus is very deadly to dogs and the survival rate, according to veterinarian professionals, is not high.  The virus attacks the intestinal lining and the immune system, causing vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, lethargy, fever and sudden death.

  • There has been great success in saving dogs by using Ease internally.  It will literally go in and kill the virus.

Seizures

  • Mix 1 drop of Marjoram and Geranium with Message Oil.  Rub behind their necks.
  • Application of an ice pack to the middle of the spine during a seizure will also lessen its duration and severity.
  • There has been amazing success using FrequenSea or ZMP400 on a daily basis!

Guardian Disinfectant Spray for Pet Odors

Make a strong spray using 20 drops of Guardian in 4 oz distilled water; shake well before using

Cat Litter box

Rinse out the litter box and spray with disinfectant spray of Guardian (see instructions for Guardian Disinfectant Spray for Pet Odors above). Let sit for 5 - 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Cats are sensitive to many essential oils; be sure to thoroughly rinse all oil out of litter tray. When dry, fill with litter as usual.

Dog repellent

In a 4 oz cobalt blue glass spray bottle, mix 20 drops of Rose Geranium and 4 oz of distilled water; shake well. Spray on areas such as carpet where your pet has had an accident to deter them from using the area again. You can also spray on furnishings you want your pet to stay off of (Do not spray fabrics that are prone to water, such as silk.)

Pet accidents on carpet

Once you have cleaned up and washed the area, spray it with the disinfecting Guardian pet spray mentioned above. Use the dog repellent spray, to the left, to discourage them from re-soiling the area.
